Since I specialize in formal portraits and children’s photography, I get asked all the time what is the best age to bring a child in for a formal portrait. After all, these portraits are so special they shouldn’t be something you do every year. Besides, the results are often so stunning, you’d quickly run out of wall space!
So, when is the right time to capture your child’s innocence, budding personality, and those adorable features you never want to forget?
The ages of 2-8 are the best window to create memorable, classic artwork of your children to adorn your walls for decades to come. (Personally, I feel that ages 2-5 are the prime ages because children this age still have those sweet baby cheeks and wide, inquisitive eyes, but they are also old enough to have developed some of their own personality.)
Children in this age group are the best to work with, too.
They can take some direction, but they have no inhibitions. They aren’t afraid to tell you exactly what they’re thinking and do what they feel. It makes for an entertaining photo shoot, and the magic of childhood comes through in the portraits when they’re finished.
At Castelo, we create the kind of portrait you’ll want to keep up forever. And many families plan to pass the portraits down to their children when they’re grown and have homes of their own. (I love a wall display like the one below for the families that have this in mind. They can send each child with their own portrait and keep the center one for themselves forever!)
No Stress for Mom
Some people are hesitant to bring children this young in for a portrait session. After all, toddlers can be wiggly and unpredictable at best, and uncooperative at worst!
But we love children so much! And we strive to make the experience no stress for parents!

How We Get the Perfect Shot
I work quickly and with intention, so even when children won’t sit still, I almost always find a way to snap one perfect photo of each child. Then, I use post-production editing to put together the best shot of each child to make one perfect, stunning portrait.
But don’t take my word for it. Here’s what the mother of the sweet boys in this portrait had to say about working with Castelo at our studio in Charleston, SC.
"As a mother of two toddler boys, I had no idea what to expect when I booked the appointment with Castelo Portrait Art - the older one can be bribed, but the little one is still very much a loose cannon. I had no clue how we would pull it off, but Maria was wonderful with the children, photographing them separately, some with me holding them, etc. and then she pieced the images together to create the perfect keepsake. She successfully captured the personalities of my boys perfectly and it resulted in a timeless memory. As a professional graphic designer, I have an even greater appreciation for her process and attention to detail! THANK YOU!"
