We’re in the middle of a cold spell here in Charleston, SC (seriously, SO cold!) and it’s starting to feel a lot more like the holiday season. For photographers and portrait artists like me, it’s a really busy time of year. I get so many calls from people who are rushing about to schedule their portrait sessions in time to get Christmas cards made.
I LOVE these special occasion pictures (see my Charleston Santa picture experience and Pet Portraits for - perfect for holiday cards). But I can’t help but think that these families could get so much more out of their portrait session. They're missing out on an opportunity to capture their entire family by scheduling holiday photos of just immediate family when in just a few weeks time they’ll be seeing grandparents, siblings, aunts and uncles, and cousins, too.
They'll all be home for the holidays and it's the perfect time to capture some imagery of the whole family that they'll all cherish for so many years to come. What could be a more amazing gift for everyone that a big, sentimental family photo that includes the whole group?
If you host a holiday celebration for the whole family at your home here in the Charleston area, it’s a wonderful opportunity to make gorgeous artwork that features all of the people you love the most. You’ll all cherish both the resulting portraits (they’re always show stoppers!) and the memory you’ll create of the portrait session.
Whether you opt for a casual beach shoot at Folly Beach, Kiawah, or Isle of Palms, or go with the gorgeous scenery of Downtown Charleston or Summerville, there are many places to make beautiful photos and beautiful holiday memories with your family.
(These places are all beautiful and charming, even when it's 30 degrees outside! Just be sure to bundle everyone up!)

Some of my favorite ideas for multi-family photos are:
The big group shot.
I’ll help you pose in a way that’s tasteful and unique, but not overwhelming!
Individual family portraits.
Highlight your immediate family in a portrait for your home.
Cousins photo.
Grandparents just love having all of their grandchildren in one photo. Plus, can you imagine how much fun the kids will have re-creating a photo like when they get together again this once they’re grown?
Generations portrait.
Are there 3 or 4 generations in your family still living? This is rare and special. Photos that show a Great Grandma, Grandma, Mom, and daughter, for example, are such a beautiful reminder of a family’s legacy.
Grandparents portrait.
Most couples whose children are grown don’t commission artwork of themselves. Why? There are so many people who love them and want to remember them even when they’re not close by.
Family is Everything. Capture Your Bond and Love While You Can.
For so many people, their family is their everything. If you’re one of those people, a big family photo portrait session is the perfect way to treat yourself in a real and meaningful way. You might regret that extra slice of pumpkin pie or the loud plastic toys that someone gives your kids at the holidays, but you’ll never ever regret splurging on beautiful imagery that showcases your family’s love and legacy.
Make it a priority. You’ll be so glad you did.
