What could be sweeter than a little girl with red curls tied up with yellow bows? Well, give her a try of donuts from my favorite donut shop here in Charleston, and you know the answer is … nothing! It’s the sweetest thing in the whole wide world.
See what I mean?
Today is National Donut Day, which is the perfect excuse to celebrate two of my favorite things: Children and sweet treats.
I always say that I love working with children because we understand each other. We get along so well because we both love imaginative play and sweets.
Of course, I keep my studio stocked with chocolates. (Obviously, I want to keep my smallest subjects happy so their true natures will really shine through in their portraits.)
And after this amazing donut portrait session, I’m thinking I should start making more frequent trips to Duck Donuts in West Ashley to treat my tiny muses, too.
This shop, which is right in my part of town in West Ashley, must bring happiness to every child who experiences their warm, delicious, made-to-order donuts. I don’t know how to make donuts, but I am in the business of making the world just a little more enjoyable and happy, too.
I do it with my portraits and artwork. They do it with donuts. We’re really not so different.
Making children smile, bringing out their budding personalities, and helping them to see how unique and truly beautiful they are is my greatest joy. It’s why I do what I do.
We could all learn something from a child’s innate ability to just be themselves. Children do not count calories--they just enjoy the simple little moments of happiness that come with a sweet treat or a magical experience. Unlike adults, they don’t ruin the moment by feeling guilty or second guessing their choice. It’s a gift and an honor to be the observer and capture these little moments.
In honor of National Donut Day, let’s all make a point to be a little more childlike and whimsical today. Stop taking things so seriously. Step away from your work and look at it from a different angle--try to see a different perspective. Attempt an outside-of-the-box approach to something mundane that you do the same way every time. Get lost in something that makes your heart sing. Play! Treat yourself.
And, for heaven’s sake, enjoy that donut!
Then, don’t forget to let us know what your favorite flavor is in the comments below. Maybe I’ll have some ready for you the next time you stop by the studio.
Artistically Yours,
Maria Sampaio
